How does tooth decay form?
Tooth decay is caused by acids produced by the bacteria that live in your in mouth. They produce these acids when you eat certain foods that contains sugars. Some examples are bread, cereal, milk, sugary drinks, fruit, bakery items or candy.

How can tooth decay be prevented?
Brushing and flossing promptly after consuming such food and regular dental cleanings & exams can prevent complications such as pain, infection & tooth loss.

What can I expect at my regular dental cleaning and exam ?
After one of our highly qualified hygenists skillfully cleans, flosses & polishes your teeth, takes digital x-rays (if needed) and gives your teeth a flouride treatment, Dr. Bertolini will begin his exam. He will carefully check your teeth, gums, mouth, throat, tmj (jaw joint), head & neck for any problems.
Following your thorough exam, Dr. Bertolini will discuss and educate you on any problems you may have and map out a detailed plan for treating the areas of concern.

How does the fluoride treatment I received at my dental visit help prevent tooth decay?
The application of high concentrations of in-office topical fluoride treatments can effectively remineralize tooth structure of early stage cavities, if the structure of the tooth has not yet been irreversibly compromised. Lower concentrations of fluoride (as used in rinses & toothpastes) help retain the presence of fluoride in the mouth which remineralize defects in the tooth surface as they occur - keeping you from getting a full blown cavitiy .

My Child's Dental Health
An early start to oral care is essential.
Dr. Bertolini recommends brushing
your child's gums as an infant,
continuing until they are old enough
to do it on their own. As an infant,
using a soft finger toothbrush/ gum
massager to begin the habit, effectively removes plaque and massages sore gums during teething. When your child has about 6-8 teeth, you can switch to a soft bristled toothbrush. Dr. Bertolini also recommends using a toothgel containing xylitol for infants and toddlers.

When Should My Child Have Their 1st Visit?
Dr. Bertolini recommends children have their first visit around their third birthday. Of course, if there is a concern with the child's teeth or noticable decay earlier than age 3, the child should be seen immediately.

What Will Happen at My 1st Visit?
Dr. Bertolini will give you a comprehensive oral examination, which includes an oral cancer screening, periodontial charting, a full mouth series of x-rays, impressions of your teeth to make diagnostic casts (models), take a full series of photographs and a smile analysis.
Based on the findings at your first visit, Dr. Bertolini will create a treatment plan to achieve the best results. At your second appointment (your compilmentary consultation), this plan will be carefully explained to you and any questions you may have will be thoroughly discussed. Also, any options in the treatment will be discussed, so that you can make an educated decsion about your dental treatment.
According to your treatment plan, your dental work will proceed in a defined sequence, so that the end result will be exactly what you desire. The finsihed product will be a comfortable bite and a beautiful smile!

proximity to the surface of the
    tooth being cleaned.
2. Use a gentle sawing motion
    through each contact (between
    each tooth).

3. Curve around the contour of
