Preserve and Protect Your Natural Tooth

During a root canal, the infected or damaged pulp inside your tooth is gently removed and the space is filled with a medicated material that restores strength and function. This treatment relieves pain, preserves your natural tooth, and helps maintain healthy jawbone and gum support while preventing neighboring teeth from shifting. Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is the best choice for long-term comfort and oral health.

Signs you may need a root canal:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
  • Severe or persistent tooth pain.
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums near the tooth.
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth.
  • A pimple or abscess on the gums.

The Root Canal Procedure

A root canal treatment typically takes one or two appointments and is performed by a dentist or endodontist. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

Step 1: Diagnosis and Evaluation

Your appointment begins with an x-ray to examine the tooth and surrounding bone to identify the cause of your discomfort. If there’s an infection, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to reduce inflammation and control bacteria before the procedure. This step helps relieve pressure caused by swelling and ensures the root canal process is as comfortable as possible.

Step 2: Preparing the Tooth

Once the area is numb, your dentist will carefully access the inside of the tooth. The infected or damaged pulp, bacteria, and decayed tissue are gently removed, clearing the infection and preventing it from spreading. This step relieves pain and prepares the tooth for long-term restoration.

Step 3: Cleaning and Sealing

After cleaning the inside of the tooth, your dentist may apply medication to eliminate any remaining infection. If the treatment is completed over multiple visits, a temporary filling will protect the tooth between appointments. Once fully disinfected, the canal is sealed to prevent future infection and restore the tooth’s natural function and strength.

Cost of a root canal in North Canton

The cost of a root canal varies based on your specific needs, but it is often the most effective way to save a natural tooth over the long term. With a typical insurance plan, most patients pay about $200 to $500 out of pocket. Without insurance, treatment generally ranges from $600 to $1,200 or more. After an oral exam, our team will provide a detailed quote for your insurance company so you know what your coverage includes.

What Affects the Cost of a Root Canal?

  • The severity of the infection.
  • The location of the affected tooth.
  • The condition of surrounding teeth and gums.
  • The overall complexity of the procedure.

Every case is unique, and an accurate estimate can only be given after an in-person evaluation. A consultation ensures you understand your options and receive the most appropriate treatment plan for your oral health.

Are There Alternatives to a Root Canal?

A tooth infection or abscess is a serious condition that requires prompt care. Root canal therapy removes infection, relieves pain, and preserves your natural tooth. Without treatment, infection can spread and lead to more invasive procedures.

If you are unsure whether you need a root canal, schedule a consultation. At our office Dr. Justin Modugno will explain your options and proceed only when you are fully comfortable. Our goal is to relieve discomfort, protect your health, and help you make the best decision for your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Damage can occur from deep decay, trauma, a dead nerve, or a loose filling or crown. Cracks or chips in the tooth can also allow bacteria to reach the pulp and cause infection.

Common signs include persistent tooth pain, swelling, sensitivity to heat or cold, or tenderness when chewing. Your dentist will confirm with an exam and x-rays if a root canal is needed.

Modern root canal treatment is designed to be comfortable. Local anesthesia and advanced techniques ensure the area is completely numb, and most patients feel little to no discomfort.

After treatment, the tooth is often restored with a dental crown to protect it from further damage. You may feel mild soreness for a day or two, which can be managed with over-the-counter medication.

In most cases, yes. Root canal therapy can preserve your natural tooth structure and prevent the need for extraction. However, if the tooth is severely fractured or decayed, dental implants may be considered instead.

When properly restored and maintained, a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy can last a lifetime. Good oral hygiene and regular checkups are key to long-term success.

The only alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction, which would then require a replacement option like a bridge or implant. In most cases, saving your natural tooth is the healthier and more effective option.

I went to Dr. Modugno’s predecessor, Dr. Bertolini, for over 40 years. When he retired, he could not have left his practice in any better hands nor would he have chosen anyone to take over his practice that did not meet his high standards. Dr. Modugno replaced a veneer that had cracked and it was a perfect match. He has a caring and professional chair side manner and takes time to explain everything thoroughly in a way that is easily understandable. His dental hygienist staff takes time with patient cleanings and makes helpful suggestions for oral care. I would highly recommend his practice.
