Types of tooth staining
The stains on your teeth can be one of two types:
- surface stains
- stains inside the dentin (the layer of tooth under your enamel) or in cracks in the enamel.
Surface Stain Removal For Your Teeth
Whitening toothpaste and rinses can remove some of the surface stains and we recommend using them for upkeep after whitening your smile. To keep your teeth their whitest we also recommend you do a whitening refresh for four to six days (or until you’ve reached your desired shade) once every 6 to 12 months. But it really depends on how often you consume teeth-staining foods or drinks.
Deep Stain Removal For Your Teeth
To remove the deep stains that cause your teeth to look yellow, you must use an active whitening ingredient like carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These ingredients are found in whitening gels and trays. They react with the discolored molecules in your dentin changing the chemical structure so the molecules are no longer colored. Leaving you with a bright, beautiful smile!
While whitening, some patients experience tooth sensitivity. We use a tooth whitening system contains an ingredient to reduce this problem. If you still have some sensitivity you can also: reduce the amount of time you wear the whitening trays, whiten every other day instead of every day, or use a tooth sensitivity toothpaste. If these options do not work for you, discuss your other options with Dr. Bertolini.

Tips to keep your teeth white and bright
To keep your smile bright and white after whitening your teeth, you should avoid stain-causing foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, colored drinks, berries, and tomato sauces.
Smoking also causes tooth discoloration.
It takes just as long to re-stain your teeth as it did to begin with, so good oral habits and oral hygiene are the best ways to keep your bright smile! If you do partake in stain-causing foods or habits, you may need to do a touch-up whitening treatment a few nights a couple of times a year to keep your desired shade.
Tooth whitening is the quick and simple way to get more confidence in your smile!
For a whiter, brighter smile Dr. Bertolini recommends using prescription-strength Opalescence Tooth Whitening Systems. The take-home whitening gels allow you to whiten your teeth at your convenience – in a safe, effective and customized way.
